Cost Accountant

Job Summary

Mshel Homes Limited seeks a detail-oriented Cost Accountant to provide accurate cost analysis, financial control, and contract cost reporting across the company’s real estate development and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track all costs associated with construction and real estate contracts, ensuring expenditures remain within approved budgets.
  • Review and validate contractor and subcontractor invoices, progress claims, and payment certificates against contract schedules and work done.
  • Prepare and maintain contract cost schedules, cash flow projections, and cost-to-complete estimates for all active development projects.
  • Analyse contract variations, change orders, and claims — assessing financial impact and advising the Contract Management team accordingly.
  • Identify and escalate cost overruns, irregularities, or financial risks early, with recommended corrective actions.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and project-end cost reports highlighting budget vs. actual performance, variances, and financial risks.
  • Conduct detailed cost analysis covering materials, labour, plant, and overhead to support informed financial decision-making.
  • Reconcile contract costs in the accounting system and ensure accurate allocation to relevant project cost centres and general ledger accounts.
  • Support the preparation and management of project budgets, conducting ongoing variance analysis and recommending cost control measures.
  • Assist in contractor and supplier evaluation, reviewing BOQs, pricing schedules, and rate analyses to ensure value for money.
  • Ensure all contract cost transactions are properly documented and compliant with company financial policies, accounting standards, and Nigerian regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audit processes by providing accurate cost data, documentation, and financial records as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification or membership in ICAN, ACCA, CIMA, or NIQS is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in cost accounting or project cost control, preferably in construction or real estate.
  • Demonstrable experience in reviewing BOQs, contract valuations, and contractor payment certifications.
  • Proficiency in advanced Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP software; familiarity with Nigerian tax regulations (WHT, VAT) applicable to construction contracts.
