Job Description
- A sports editor manages the editorial direction of a media house’s sports desk
- They assign and edit stories, manage a team of writers, verify facts, and ensure timely content publication across print, digital, and broadcast platforms.
- They shape the publication’s voice and engage audiences.
Core Responsibilities
- Content Planning: Determine which sports events, features, and breaking news stories to cover, and how much prominence they receive on the site, newspaper, or broadcast.
- Team Management: Assign stories to beat reporters, columnists, and freelancers. Provide constructive feedback, mentor staff, and oversee scheduling.
- Editing & Fact-Checking: Edit articles and scripts for clarity, grammar, accuracy, and adherence to editorial style (e.g., AP Style).
- Digital Optimization: Ensure online articles are optimized with compelling headlines, SEO keywords, and metadata to maximize audience engagement and web traffic.
- Cross-Platform Collaboration: Coordinate with photographers, graphic designers, video editors, and social media managers to create visually appealing multimedia content.
- Quality & Ethics: Uphold journalistic integrity and ethical standards by preventing bias and ensuring proper source verification.
