Product Design and Development Engineer
Role Summary
The Product Design and Development Engineer (Rehabilitation Systems) will lead the digital design, prototyping, and production of prosthetic and orthotic devices within our in-house fabrication unit. The role suits an engineer who is comfortable across 3D scanning, CAD, and additive manufacturing, and who enjoys developing rehabilitation products from concept to finished device.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the digital fabrication workflow from 3D scanning through CAD rectification to printed output.
- Design and iterate on prosthetic and orthotic components using parametric CAD and mesh-editing tools.
- Operate and maintain in-house 3D printing systems, including process tuning and quality control.
- Develop and document print parameters for engineering-grade polymers.
- Conduct design reviews, mechanical checks, and structured product development cycles.
- Maintain CAD documentation, version control, and design history records.
- Collaborate with clinicians and other engineering staff to refine fit, function, and patient outcomes.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.
- Proficiency in parametric CAD software and mesh-editing tools.
- Practical experience with 3D scanning and handling of organic scan geometry.
- Hands-on experience operating industrial-grade FDM 3D printers.
- Working knowledge of design for additive manufacturing (DfAM).
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, tolerances, and assembly documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing prosthetic, orthotic, or other medical devices.
- Familiarity with engineering thermoplastics and fibre-reinforced polymers.
- Exposure to mechanical testing of load-bearing components.
- Understanding of relevant medical device or prosthetic testing standards.
