UAV / Aircraft Design Engineer
- Job Type Full Time
- Qualification BA/BSc/HND
- Experience 3 years
- Location Abuja
- Job Field Engineering / Technical
Core Purpose:
- To conceptualize, design, analyze, and validate fixed-wing, rotary-wing, or hybrid unmanned aircraft systems. This role bridges the gap between initial mission requirements and the physical aircraft, ensuring optimized aerodynamics, performance, structural integrity, and overall flight safety.
- Lifecycle Position: Involved across the entire product development cycle—from translating high-level mission needs into trade studies, down to supporting prototype fabrication and real-world flight testing.
Key Responsibilities & Deliverables
- Configuration & Sizing: Developing early aircraft layouts (wings, fuselage, control surfaces, payload integration) and executing sizing, mass properties estimation, and center-of-gravity (CG) tracking.
- Engineering Analysis: Predicting critical performance metrics (takeoff, cruise, endurance, service ceiling, stall speeds) and conducting aerodynamic and structural evaluation via CFD and FEA methods.
- Materials & CAD Modeling: Selecting optimized airfoils and structural materials while maintaining master 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical data.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Interfacing daily with propulsion, avionics, embedded systems, and manufacturing teams to optimize Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA).
- Core Deliverables: Aircraft conceptual design definitions, master CAD models/production drawings, aerodynamic/structural analysis sheets, weight/balance reports, and engineering change documentation.
Candidate Requirements
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering with at least 3 years of relevant hands-on aircraft or UAV design experience.
- Technical Software Suite: Proficiency in standard CAD suites (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX) and engineering analysis platforms (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, OpenFOAM, XFLR5, MATLAB/Simulink).
- Domain Competencies: Deep understanding of fluid/flight mechanics, aircraft structural layouts, and load paths. Preferred familiarity with composite design, electric/hybrid propulsion configurations, and aviation standards.
- Mindset & Soft Skills: Systems-level thinker with excellent documentation habits, high attention to detail, and a willingness to get hands-on during prototype assembly and field-range flight testing.

Method of Application
About the Role:
- We are seeking a highly analytical, multi-disciplinary, and hands-on Embedded Systems & PCB Design Engineer to join our engineering team.
- This is a comprehensive, end-to-end hardware role. You will completely own the electronics lifecycle of our tactical platforms—moving seamlessly from initial schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout, through to real-time firmware development, bench-top laboratory assembly, and live hardware debugging.
Key Responsibilities
- Embedded Systems & Firmware Development: Design, write, and debug clean, efficient C/C++ code for real-time applications on microcontrollers (STM32, ESP32, ARM Cortex, etc.). Build robust peripheral interfaces using communication protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, and RS485 while optimizing for memory and power.
- Multi-Layer PCB Design: Execute schematic capture and complex PCB layouts (integrating analog, digital, power, and RF sections) using industry tools like Altium, KiCad, or Eagle. Manage BOM selection, footprint creation, and version control libraries.
- Precision Assembly & Rework: Perform high-precision SMD and through-hole soldering for rapid prototypes and small-batch production runs. Confidently handle hot-air rework, microscope tasks, and fine-pitch components (BGA, QFP, 0402/0603) in an ESD-safe workspace.
- Hardware Bring-Up & Validation: Debug, test, and validate new PCB revisions down to the component level. Utilize laboratory diagnostic tools including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters to verify signal integrity, power distribution, and EMC compliance.
- Cross-Functional Design for Manufacturing (DFM): Bridge the gap between digital design and physical manufacturing. Collaborate with mechanical and assembly teams to reduce component complexity, ensure physical enclosure fits, and generate test procedures.
What We Are Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Education: B.Eng / B.Sc in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering.
- Experience: 3+ years of proven experience in embedded hardware and systems development.
- Firmware & Protocols: Strong C/C++ development skills. Proficient with hardware debuggers (JTAG/SWD) and core protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN).
- Hardware Craftsmanship: Excellent bench skills, including fine SMD soldering, component-level fault finding, and diagnostic equipment operation.
- Tools: Competency in Altium Designer, KiCad, or Eagle, along with Git for revision control.
Preferred Skills:
- Practical experience deploying RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) in timing-critical environments.
- Background in drone hardware integration, robotics, motor control, or IoT applications.
- Familiarity with structured quality and documentation standards.
